An innovation-driven partnership integrating advanced technologies for smoother, more effective airport information management
Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport and A-ICE jointly announce the adoption and installation of the A-DDS (A-ICE Dynamic Display System), an advanced solution designed to improve information distribution and enhance the passenger experience through a modern, flexible and integrated digital infrastructure.
This initiative is part of a broader innovation path undertaken by Bologna Airport, confirming its commitment to adopting advanced technologies in support of the airport’s information ecosystem, with the goal of making the passenger experience increasingly seamless, clear and digital.
The A-DDS system was successfully integrated into the existing operational environment, interfacing with third-party systems without service interruptions and ensuring a smooth, issue-free transition. This result was made possible by the system’s modular and interoperable architecture, designed to adapt to complex, mission-critical environments.
From a functional standpoint, A-DDS enables centralized flight information management, now complemented by the ability to schedule institutional communications and multimedia messages for passengers. The tool thus evolves into a full-fledged multichannel airport communication platform, with a direct impact on perceived service quality.
Matteo Gamberini, ICT Systems and Infrastructures Manager at Bologna Airport: “The implementation of the new public information system was a challenge we met successfully through a rigorous engineering approach. Integration with existing infrastructure was carried out without compromising security, ensuring operational continuity and maximum reliability. Working with our colleagues at A-ICE, attentive, responsive professionals, allowed us to harmonize heterogeneous components while ensuring compatibility, scalability and compliance with the highest standards.”
Luca Di Giacomantonio, Application Manager at Bologna Airport: “Implementing this system gave us an opportunity to develop a solid, flexible application capable of integrating advanced features while guaranteeing high operational reliability. Working with the A-ICE team was straightforward, almost natural, and enabled us to optimize application processes, ensuring efficient management and an easily scalable platform for future needs.”
Matteo Ulissi (Solution Architect & Product Specialist, A-DDS): “It was extremely gratifying to see the A-DDS system come to life in a complex environment like Bologna Airport. Working side by side with such a skilled technical team allowed us to customize the system precisely, deploying it across hundreds of monitors without ever interrupting airport operations. This project is a prime example of how technological innovation and collaboration can translate into real value for passengers and operators alike.”
Andrea Sciarra (IT Senior Architect – Aviation Systems): “Working with Bologna Airport was a highly professional experience. The joint effort with their team, competent, responsive and consistently quality-driven, made it possible to release a complex system smoothly and with no impact on operations. This outcome reflects not only the technological level of the A-DDS system, but also the effectiveness of a shared, structured engineering approach.”
The integration of A-DDS at Bologna Airport not only demonstrates an effective partnership, but perfectly embodies the digital growth strategy of Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport. Located approximately 6 km northwest of the city center, the airport handled over 10.7 million passengers in 2024, ranking among Italy’s top seven airports by traffic. Its strategic position in the heart of Emilia-Romagna makes it a key hub for domestic and international connections, benefiting from proximity to the high-speed rail line and the “Marconi Express” people mover, which links it to the central station in under 8 minutes.
The airport is at the center of an ambitious 2022–2026 Innovation Plan aimed at elevating the passenger experience through the adoption of smart technologies, big data, digital services for passengers with disabilities, chatbots, wayfinding and advanced customer service. Ongoing infrastructure works (from terminal refurbishment to security systems, electric parking and logistics hubs) demonstrate a strong commitment to efficiency, accessibility and sustainability.
In this context, A-ICE proved to be an effective technology partner, combining deep vertical expertise in aviation with a clear vision of IT’s enabling role in improving airport operations. The A-DDS (Dynamic Display System) serves as a strategic element in the digital transformation of Bologna Airport, offering a complete platform for the centralized, intelligent management of informational and multimedia content.
Designed to be highly scalable, modular and cross-platform, A-DDS enables real-time publication of flight information, advertising content, custom messages, emergency alerts and service notifications, all through a simple, configurable interface compatible with standalone monitors, video walls and mobile devices.
The system’s lightweight architecture allowed for rapid deployment across a range of hardware, both in terms of technology and computing power, without compromising performance or reliability.
